Letter to Mr. Giannini

Dear Mr. Giannini,

I cannot express how thankful I am for the incredible opportunity you have afforded me in creating UNCSA. This haven and training ground that you created for artists has allowed me to grow, expand, and mature as an individual and a creative professional at a pace and intensity that I have never experienced before. This artist's utopia is unlike any school in the country that I have visited and furnishes itself with a bevvy of talent, leadership, and guidance.

During my time here at the school, I had the opportunity to take a class titled Digital Media for the Artist. This investigation of media, creativity, and the way we learn in the ever expanding digital world lead me to research your life and work. It was incredible to me that your work as a 20th century composer was so extensive. Articles classify you as a great romantic composer in a time where most composers were focused on classical composition. But with all of the greatness applied to your life's work, he seems to have slipped out of history. It was not all of your musical compositions, operas, symphony's that allowed your name to float to the top. The real impact and footprint left on this earth is the great legacy left in UNCSA. Your passion for music that manifested itself in its romantic ideology extended into the tutelage of artists.

Allow me to describe what I have been allowed to do because of the school this year. Creating my fourth year thesis film, I had the opportunity to work with a fantastic composer from the school of music. The film being a musical, we worked together for months crafting the songs and shaping the film as a whole. This incredible experience would have been simply impossible at most any other creative institution. The work is not only interesting, but deep, rich, and maintains a level of polish found at any professional level. This is all thanks to you Mr. Giannini.
Bravi!

Here is a brief video and audio presentation with production stills and music from the movie ZomRomCom: The Musical! . Enjoy!

Video Construction/Composition Completion

Video Construction/Composition Project

Upon completion of this video project, I realized that my end result had come even closer to my original intent than I expected. The clips I used from "Utopia" deal rather directly with the idea of cash flow and how the people in charge have ultimate control over it.

While this great change in media distribution is taking place across the world, artists must seize the opportunity to command the destiny of their creations. While the world is flooded with more art than ever, we are more capable of distributing it than any generation before us.

Video Construction/Composition Plans

I will address the subject of internet media monetization through my video assignment by exploring old movie clips that deal with big business. Though the internet did not exist in the distant past, the public eye has always turned toward the way big corporations bring home the bacon. While this has been a prevalent topic in the world of film, the film industry itself is now at the center of this exploration.

Monetization of the Internet

The global expanse that is the modern day internet has forever changed the way that media distribution takes place. The big media conglomerates must figure out new ways to control, distribute, and expand their revenue stream due to the new forms of media we face on a daily basis. The television and theaters will be dwarfed by this digital explosion and this eventuality cannot be avoided. As artists, it is in our best interest to be on the cutting edge of this growth in order to stay competitive in our ever changing mass media climate.

Impact of Digital Media on Creative and Intellectual Work

Digital media's impact on our intellectual and creative processes are far reaching and ingrained in our society. The way people gather information has been forever changed by the glut of information available to us. Much of this information is summarized, surface, and replayed time and time again, watering down much of the source material. The amount of regurgitated uninformed sources spreads like a plague across the internet as a scourge on our intellectual growth. This extreme infiltration of information aids in our intellectual and creative growth as well though. If the appropriate time is taken and resources utilized, there is more in depth information available to people than ever. Most anyone can gain access to a wealth of information about any topic, allowing for intense research and growth in a variety of fields. While much of this information may have been impossible to access for many people 20 years ago, the internet does not discriminate.

Audio Remix Exploration

The world of audio allows our brain to respond to even more stimuli at the same time. Rather than being bogged down by trying to read something, our brain can be hit with all of the information from a song at once. This allows for a greater understanding and enjoyment of simultaneity in the content that cannot be achieved in writing. The dissolution of the thought and goal behind the original audio melds with all of the different parts that are involved to create a cohesive product. They not only meld well together, but create an even stronger product as one.

Audio Remix

For my audio remix, I'll be approaching environmental sounds & musical sounds. My plan of approach is to utilize sounds from advertisements and electronic music (possibly classical or hip hop as well) to create an organized cacophony of the mass media that inundates us on a daily basis. I hope to make sure that it is not only thick with audio samples, but actually pleasing to listen to.

My gathering goals are:
-ambient beats
-classical music
-hip-hop
-commercial jingles
-MANY sections of commercial dialogue and speech
